CHUTNEY DISPLAY TYPEFACE

Typeface designed for 'Chutney Chick' which aims to bridge the gap between Western, English-Speaking audiences and Urdu/Arabic Speakers.

This is alongside the continued aim of creating space for Second and Third Generation South Asians, who often speak both English and Urdu/Arabic. Many Second and Third Generation South Asians also have issues accessing Urdu/Arabic, and therefore find English more accessible (as a result of growing up in English-speaking Western countries.)

I have selected the languages Urdu and Arabic as these are commonly spoken by South Asians living in the West. In terms of Urdu, this is due to Urdu rising to prominence during the British rule of India. Urdu combines several languages spoken by South Asians and Muslims (Hindi, Arabic and Persian languages). In terms of Arabic, this is because The Qur’an is written in Classical Arabic - therefore Muslims around the world learn, speak, and preserve the language.

As Urdu is derived from Arabic, the alphabets appear similar. This is also why I have selected these two languages- this allows me to be influenced by both languages which opens up the project to a wider audience.

The typeface itself is English, so that it is accessible and welcoming to Western audiences who only speak English.
